Prom Date

I sat on the porch, scrolling through facebook, which was a bad idea by the way. How can you divert your mind from something which was meant to show up in your feed. The more I resisted it, the more I had to face it. My damn feed was filled with stupid Prom uproar.

“Jimmy” it was dad. Sigh. Now he will inquire about why didn’t I go to the prom. He came and sat beside me. “I thought you were going to the prom son”

“I am not going dad” I said.

“Why not?”

Well how do I tell you that your son is incapable of having a date?

“ummmm… just did not want to”

“did you ask someone out?”

What? I mean seriously? What? How in the world did you….??? Oh my god. He was looking into my eyes and that meant he needed a reply. A reply, not an excuse. And I could swear he would know if I lied.

“I did. i asked out three girls. They all refused. And I don’t think it would be a proud thing to go on a prom without a partner.” I turned to him. “Dad, I don’t fit anywhere. You know there is a category of certain kind of ugly people. And now I realise, I fall into it.”

Dad laughed. “You know, I used to think exactly like you back in my high school. I was a geek; I never knew a world beyond books, too afraid to ask out girls. Who would want to date a nerd? I believed you were supposed to have a personality to get a partner. You’ve got to be popular. So when it was time for prom, I knew I was not going to attend it anyway. My mom wanted me to be there, she bought a suit for me and I was not breaking her heart. I wore the suit, kissed her goodbye and drove away. Where? Don’t ask. I just turned the stereo and drove. After driving tirelessly and thinking how am I going to make my whole life as a single pathetic man, I decided to pause. I stopped by a peaceful lake. Dawn was breaking; I sat by the pond and cried. I too wanted to be loved. And the thought of never being able to be loved was consuming me. I cried for hours. Soon when I became a little relaxed, I decided to let it go. Somehow my brain successfully convinced me to stop that bullshit and grow up. i realised my foolishness. What was the use of all the drama? I could have better stayed at home and enjoyed some steak. I could have watched that 70s show on the tv. How did i become so emotional all because I didn’t have a date? Honestly. I was cursing myself. That turned out well actually, that very moment, I decided that I am going remain a geek in a world full of lovebirds and will embrace myself. And with that decision, I got up, brushed my pants and moved towards my car. Time to head home. That was long long time ago. I just carried on being myself, I was very proud of my identity. I let it go.” Dad paused, a very tender smile spread across his face.

“And?”

“And now I wake up each day beside a beautiful woman, who loves me so dearly. I have four amazing and talented kids who have grown to be great human beings. The attic which was filled with science books and crazy experiments is now filled with toys. The walls are still flaunting your sketches. The truth is Jimmy, had I not loved myself, I am damn sure I would have cried for my bad luck forever. I would still be that single pathetic man who’d cry and whine every day.” He paused and wrapped his arms around my shoulder. “so, the key is, to love yourself, the key is to let it go. You don’t need to worry for your future, do not be disheartened if you don’t find someone at this point of time. May be you just haven’t given your life enough time to unfold itself for you. Wait for it to show you what has it got for you. and one day son, you will also have an attic full of toys, walls full of sketches and a beautiful person to wake you up each morning.”

Before you become his bride…

You don’t marry a man, you marry a lifestyle. Right from the moment you’ll become his wife, you will be seeing yourself as a part of him. You will adopt his habits, his favorite tea, his favorite color…
And it will be spontaneous.
Each morning, you will wake up and walk towards the mirror only to see his reflection, instead of your own. His least efforts will speak aloud. Things which were never noticed by you, suddenly will be prominent…
Make sure you feel good with him. Make sure you feel comfortable in his presence. Don’t make love as the only parameter to choose your husband. For there’s a reason a spouse is called a life-partner. Because my dear, you don’t marry a man, you marry a lifestyle

Her rights as a mother

“Mom, I don’t want to get married right now. Not so soon. I have my exams scheduled mom”

“Dear, it’s your father’s decision. He must have thought many times before arranging the guy for you. Why don’t you think from his perspective once?”

“it’s not about the guy mom, it’s about me, can’t you see?” cried Ritu. Every single teardrop broke Neelam’s heart into a millions pieces. She remembered the last night’s episode when she had told him how she thought why it is not the right time to wed their daughter off. Oh what a crime had she committed by opening her mouth. He made sure she’d regret every word she had spoken.  After all women were not allowed to express their opinion. She couldn’t tell the tales of all the sufferings she went through last night. Neelam stood there as her daughter wept, and soon, left. With heavy heart, she stood in the balcony, watching the sky and the birds. It did not help to soothe the pain. Not a bit.

She watched the kids play cricket in the park, the busy road… the vendors…

She saw an emaciated bitch standing near a tree surrounded by her pups who were feeding from her.  Suddenly a pack of dogs attacked the little pups. The dogs were bulky and strong. The bitch cried and counter-attacked. The puppies were crying as they saw their mother fighting and chasing away the bully dogs. It took her a lot of effort but the dogs did run away eventually. The bitch returned, tired and exhausted. Very carefully, she inspected her pups and licked them lovingly. The pups felt safe. Once again, they gathered around their mother as she lay on the floor and started feeding.

As she stood watching the whole scenario, something sparked in Neelam’s heart. She felt liberated for the first time in her heart, as a mother. She knew now, what a ‘mother’ meant. What a mother is capable of. She finally decided her daughter’s fate, and that set her free.

Father

“Daddy, do my hair, quick” exclaimed little Mayera, as she hurriedly brushed her long hair. Raman was still packing her lunch. There was literally a chaos every morning. “daddyyyyyyyy” she let out another cry. “Coming darling” Raman burst out of the kitchen.  He carefully parted those long hair into two and braided them neatly. Then he kept the hot lunch box into the little pink bag. The school bus was honking repeatedly. Raman picked Mayera and her belongings and ran out. “There you go baby” he helped her as she struggled to ascend up the bus stairway.

“I love you Daddy”

“I love you too baby, and do finish your lunch”…..Followed by exchange of pecks on cheeks.

Raman waved as the bus pulled out. He smiled as he remembered his struggle to adopt a disabled child.

The Unsaid Answer

“Should I really be doing this?” she asked.

“Yes Nancy” said the devil in her head.

“No” opinioned the good in her.

“Okay” she was so confused, as she sat there holding a bottle full of sleeping pills. “Okay, give me 5 reasons you both. Why should I be doing this?”

The good in her was silent. But the devil began to speak enthusiastically- “well that’s easy, here goes- number one- you’ve failed you parents. Number two- you are pretty much not doing well in your job due to depression so you are eventually going to get laid off. Number 3- your boyfriend of seven years ditched you and on top of that, is getting engaged to someone else of his parents’ choice. Number four-you have no shoulder to cry on, no parents, no friends.. Basically you have hit the rock bottom. You are finished, the end, what’s the point in living now? Oh.. and number five- you look ugly”

“Well” she sighed “every word you say is true, I believe you” she paused. Suddenly she turned to the good side. “Hey, what about you?”

“What about me?”

“Well, don’t you have any reason to support your opinion?”

“Sure I do, my dear”

“So.. Won’t you speak?”

The good side kept mum. The silence was now slowly consuming Nancy and pushing her more to let it off. “okay, so that’s it the….”

“WOOF WOOF!!!!!!!!” yelped Max.

At once, the bottle fell off her hand.. she quickly ran towards the kitchen. “Oh God. Oh God… Max are you hungry?? I’m so sorry”

The good side smiled. “There you go Nancy.”
